Senegalese-American Chart-topper Looks to Light Up Africa

Senegalese-American musician and record producer Akon is well known for lighting up the stage and the music charts. But now he’s set his sights on a more important mission than delighting music fans: supplying electricity to 600 million Africans who currently lack access to the grid. He has started an initiative called Akon Lighting Africa. Its first project is the launch of a Solar Academy in Bamako, Mali. The faculty at the academy, which is scheduled to open this summer, will help African engineers and entrepreneurs develop skills that will enable them to produce solar-powered microgrids and make it easier to acquire the necessary equipment. Africa has the lowest percentage of inhabitants with access to national grids, but has the benefit of 320 days of sun each year on average. Harnessing that solar energy will not only allow Africans to use electronic gadgets, but also create a new category of tech jobs that could boost the standard of living across the continent. “We expect the Africans who graduate from this center to devise new, innovative, technical solutions,” Thione Niang, one of Akon Lighting Africa’s cofounders, told Reuters. “With this academy, we can capitalize on Akon Lighting Africa and go further.” The group announced the launch of the academy late last month at the second United Nations Sustainable Energy for All Forum, in New York City.

“Late July, early morning around half seven but the sunlight is already pouring, through the curtain less window as it was summer. Suddenly I felt a push to write ‘I Choose to Be Free’.

I get so inspired by the song ‘I Choose To Be Free’ as it is a song I wrote in 2011 summer  when I was in a situation I did not see coming. Then I felt unsettled with sleepless nights and cloudless mornings.

If you have come across a book titled ‘All the beggars riding’ by Lucy Caldwell, you might understand my situation.  A story about Lara and her brother that lost their father in a terrible accident and she was trying to erase the memories and get back on track.

So at that distressing time I made sure I meditated everyday on Deuteronomy 30:9 “This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death,blessings and curses. Now choose life that you and your children may live“.

Also I make the confession and declare ‘I Choose to Be Free’ every time. Then I started seeing results in my life.

Going to record the song with my producer Wole Oni in February 2013 the waiting now was like a bubble in my chest. However, going into studio was a breathless experience as I felt the hand of God on the project.”

Everyday life pastes its dulling moments and routines over the rawness. Though the rawness is there, but I strongly believe we should choose to be free from bondage, slavery, poverty, barrenness, manipulation, condemnation, retrogression, setback, affliction, oppression and everything that God does not approve of in our lives.

Yes we should shine victoriously, be above and not beneath because God has set us FREE to rule as kings and priests forever!

So this is a way of giving back what God has blessed me with and I hope the song continues to bless all my friends and fans around the world.

Alexis made it to the Top 20 out of 15,000 who auditioned for the BET Sunday Best show and then survived the competition to the final, where she was first runner-up. "Even though I didn't win, I thank God for the platform that it provided, it really opened doors for me," she says.

She has completed recording her first album, L.O.L.: Living Out Loud, which was released on March 12, 2013, and debuted at #3 in the country. After 18 weeks after the release, L.O.L reached #1 in the country. Her freshman project L.O.L landed her Stellar Award nominations in two categories; "New Artist of the Year" & "Contemporary Female Vocalist of the Year". Alexis: It's just my favorite color ☺ I didn't expect it to become a signature trademark thing, but after Sunday Best, it became that... It's a part of me now though... And a reminder that you don't have to fit into a box... But you can love God as uniquely as you wanna! & He'll love you the same. Be bold. Stand out and be confident!

Priscilla: Wow!!! It's really a cool signature for you. So tell me, how's your music career been since BET Sunday Best?

Alexis: OMG! It's been soooo busy!!! Loads of traveling all over the U.S. Bahamas, United Kingdom, Canada! Omg! I had a #1 album with my freshman project *L.O.L* Two Stellar nods... Now with a new label Uncle G records! Just released my first single #ALLTHEGLORY off my soon to be released project #DearDiary which debuts September 1st!!! Shhhheeeesh! So much!!! I'm grateful! God is so good.

Alexis: God has done SOOO much for me, it's my obligation to sing about it!! Gotta tell the world how amazing He is!! I know he heals because when I was sick in the hospital at 5 years old hooked up to an IV and could barely talk, He healed me and let me sing all over the world! I know him to be a provider because when my family was homeless He made a way! I know him to be a deliverer because when I had insecurities, he showed me my purpose and my true identity! Tweep (Ireland) How old were you when you started singing? How often do you vocal train?

Alexis: I am African American but my roots are actually Irish... My last name "Spight" is Irish! Started singing at 3 in church. I train everyday.

Priscilla: What inspired that song? The first time I heard it was in Toronto -I was lost in the song.so powerful
